Organizational risk takes many and varied forms. Healthcare leaders must anticipate and prepare for all manner of risks including threats to the life and health of patients, the cascading effects of medical error, staff safety, breeches of privacy and information security, impacts of regulation on operations and profitability, the dynamics of organizational change, fraud, and natural and man-made disasters, just to name a select few. The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework was developed to help identify, prioritize, and mitigate these risks, all in the midst of the dynamic and ever-shifting landscape of modern US healthcare.

Professor Barbara Youngberg, an expert in risk management, patient safety, and healthcare quality at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, will describe how a comprehensive ERM approach can better identify and manage organizational risk, all seen through the lens of profitability and sustainable financial operations. It’s not enough to simply speak about risk for its own sake – real dollars are on the line, and an effective risk management approach can literally make or break an organization. During the meeting, we will distinguish between a traditional risk management program and the more modern and ideal enterprise-wide approach. Strategies to identify actual verses speculative risks will be covered, as well as techniques for breaking down silos to allow for a broader, organization-wide understanding of risk. We will tie together the concepts of ERM and bottom line financial performance to equip you with effective strategies that can be used today at your organization. Professor Youngberg’s interactive and engaging presentation style is filled with real and often tragic stories from her decades of professional experience in patient safety and risk management.
