Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer, University of Chicago Medical Center
Alesia Coe is an executive nurse leader whose career has been shaped by a deep belief in the power of compassionate, excellent care—and in the people who deliver it. Her journey into nursing began as a young volunteer in a hospital emergency room, where she witnessed firsthand how a reassuring voice and the skilled hands of a nurse could transform fear into comfort. That experience ignited her lifelong commitment to healthcare and to elevating the nursing profession.
Today, as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at the University of Chicago Medical Center, Dr. Coe leads with a blend of clarity, empathy, and accountability. She oversees nursing and patient-care operations across a complex academic setting, ensuring that standards of practice, patient safety, and operational efficiency work in harmony. Her leadership is marked by a deep respect for those that provide and support clinical care and a belief that strong outcomes grow from strong professional relationships.
Across her more than three decades of service—including executive roles at Cook County Health & Hospitals System and the Department of Veterans Affairs—Dr. Coe has championed equitable care, professional development, and pathways for advancement. She is especially passionate about creating opportunities for women and emerging leaders, mirroring the mentorship she received throughout her own career.
A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Carol Emmott Foundation and a board-certified Nurse Executive, Dr. Coe pairs her clinical expertise with a thoughtful, people-centered leadership style. Whether guiding system-wide strategy or coaching the next generation of nurses, she remains grounded in the purpose that started it all: ensuring every patient receives exceptional care from teams that feel valued, supported, and empowered to excel.
Dr. Coe earned her BSN in 1991 and MSN in 2000 from Saint Xavier University and her DNP from The University of Alabama in 2014. She serves as an adjunct nursing professor for Saint Xavier University and holds membership with the following professional organizations: American Nurses Association, American College of Healthcare Executives, Chi Eta Phi Sorority Incorporated, Sigma Theta Tau International, Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders and American Organization for Nursing Leadership.
Alesia and her husband live in the south suburbs of Chicago and have four sons. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family & friends and participating in activities with her church and sorority.
