Celebrating 50 Years of Leadership and Community

Introduction

As the Chicago Health Executives Forum (CHEF) celebrates its 50th anniversary, we reflect on the leaders and milestones that shaped our organization. Founded by emerging health care leaders during a time of significant change, CHEF was built on collaboration, curiosity, and a shared commitment to professional growth. By honoring our legacy, we gain clarity and inspiration as we continue shaping the future of health care leadership.

Our Legacy: Organizing a Young Organization

Adapted from the Chicago Health Executives Forum Newsletter, January 1980

The Chicago Health Executives Forum was founded in 1976 by seven young healthcare executives who recognized the need for a professional entity tailored specifically to emerging health care leaders. Originally known as the Young Administrators of Chicago (YAC), the organization was created as a forum for early and mid-career executives navigating an increasingly complex healthcare landscape.

From the beginning, CHEF emphasized peer-to-peer learning, leadership development, and thoughtful exchange of ideas. Founding members helped establish CHEF’s initial organizational structure, including governance, bylaws, committees, and programming shaped directly by member input. Early initiatives such as membership surveys, journal clubs, policy discussions, and quarterly meetings ensured programming remained relevant and responsive. Their leadership helped define the organization’s mission, recruitment strategies and programs that reflected the realities facing health care leaders at the time. This collective effort created a strong organizational foundation rooted in adaptability and relevance.

As CHEF grew, it remained responsive to the changing needs of its members and the broader health care landscape. That early commitment to flexibility and engagement ensured CHEF’s continued impact and longevity—values that remain central to CHEF’s work today.
